PowerOLAP Server Service can cause computer to run slow
I’ve been chasing my tail for a couple of weeks trying to find out why it took so long for Visual Studio to open my web pages. I googled for answers, but nothing suggested seemed to apply to my situation and the KB downloads and patches didn’t do anything.
A couple of days ago I installed MySQL and my computer went from annoyingly slow to impossibly slow. My first thought was a virus – AVG had detected a trojan a few days earlier, so I began complete virus scans via several programs in Safe mode. Still painfully slow. Then I had a bright idea – roll back to a system restore version from a week ago when it was all working fine. When I rebooted with the rolled back version, I had no icons on my desktop and not even a start button. I then googled this problem (on the laptop) and found a reference to a service ’starting’ or ’stopping’ which could be causing the problem.
Sure enough, it was PowerOLAP that was trying to start. This meant that everything else was in limbo until that service had successfully started (could be half an hour). But with the added installation of MySQL, PowerOLAP was trying to restart each time, which meant that it was in a gigantic loop – hideous!
My solution was to boot in safe mode, open msconfig and disable the PowerOLAP service, then reboot.
Hooray!! It now works! My quad core is now running at the fast speeds that it should.
I had been told that PowerOLAP isn’t compatible with SKYPE because of a conflict with ports. MySQL also uses a port, so this was the problem. So beware when installing PowerOLAP on a development computer – IT WILL CONFLICT WITH OTHER APPS!
deCMSOrder – deCMS with integrated shopping cart
And now the shopping cart version of deCMS is available – called deCMSOrder.
This is the dead easy ecommerce solution which uses similar features to deCMS (read below).
The shopping cart allows for as many categories and subcategories as you want, and there is no limit on the number of products. deCMSOrder uses the same editor as deCMS to edit the product details, so changes to your content are quick and simple.
The shopping cart has features such as search for products, breadcrumb trail to show the users where they have been, picture enlarging, see all products on one page and easy navigation. The shopping cart contents are stored in a cookie.
After checkout, deCMSOrder automatically generates an invoice detailing the items in the shopping cart. This is sent to the customer’s email address and a summary of the order is sent to the supplier. Payment can be made by direct debit, cheque/money order or via Paypal for processing of credit cards. Other payment gateways can be easily added.
Freight can be calculated based on the weight of each product (for courier delivery), via a flat fee, via simple postal costs or a custom method.
The system can be customised to suit each user’s requirements. For example, logos, colours, freight calculations, invoice layout, etc. can be changed easily.
The system is easy to use for people visiting your site and easy for you to use as the owner of the site. If you’ve tried other shopping carts and found them slow and tedious, then deCMSOrder is the solution.
To see a working demo of the system goto http://decmsorder.micropulse.com.au
For a free trial of the system, email sue.smiles@micropulse.com.au or call Sue on (02) 9982 9268.
deCMS (deadeasyCMS) – simple content management system using the kiss principle (keep it simple stupid!)
I’ve just finished a modified version of my javascript CMS.
I’ve called it deCMS because it is dead easy to use.
It has all the features that most small to medium enterprises (SMEs) need in a content management system.
There are lots of other CMS solutions out there, but they are all so hard to use. Most users just want to login and start making quick changes to their website. That’s where this system excels.
The front end has a javascript function set providing the fancy ajax features (but works well even if javascript is turned off). The back end is written in asp.net with javascript functionality and javascript tinyMCE editor. It uses a template for the skin or master and creates all the pages based on the xml content. At the push of a button it regenerates the html pages right there on the web site. The template needs to be manipulated via traditional html editor methods, but once set up, the content can change as frequently as the user likes.
You can have unlimited pages and 2 levels or tiers for the menu items. The html generator reads the content database, generates the menu for each page and regenerates all the pages in the blink of an eye. Fabulous!! (if I do say so myself)
Sorry, it won’t become open source. I’ve spent too many hours slaving over the code to give it away.
Go to my newly created demo at http://decms.micropulse.com.au to check it out further.
If you’d like a demo set up just for you, contact me (sue.smiles@micropulse.com.au) and I’d be glad to set you up with your own demo to play with.
Web designer/Web developer/Web programmer northern beaches, Sydney, Dee Why
I am puzzled by Google and what it does with it’s page ranking.
I am trying to find the right combination of words and phrases in the title of my home page to get the maximum number of hits. But each time that I fiddle with this, Google seems to bump my url way down the ranks, so instead of appearing in 6th position on the first page, I am relegated to page 6!
Perhaps it is because I have a couple of other urls that have similar words and phrases in their titles and keywords. I have read that if you have duplicate web pages, this causes conflict within Google’s engine and can end up in the web page not even being listed.
This seems to be the case with me.
Very disappointing when I try so hard to get a good ranking, achieve it, then find that I don’t exist any more.
Arghhhh!
More cheap computers, parts, laptops from msy.com.au
If you’re in the market for a new laptop, desktop or computer parts, check out msy.com.au
They have some excellent prices and lots of stores Australia wide. Compare their prices with those on ebay – sometimes the ebay price is better than the msy price. However, overall the prices are very competitive and their range is quite comprehensive.
And, no, I’m not paid by them to say this (however, feel free to reward my free publicity!). I’ve just done lots of research before buying a laptop and wanted to share my knowledge with anyone interested in getting a good deal. I ended up buying my laptop from catchoftheday.com.au – a Toshiba. But I was sorely tempted to buy from msy.com.au. So for good, everyday prices, I’d recommend msy.com.au
Cheap Computers, laptops and parts from Bytestech on Sydney’s northern beaches
I’ve recently bought a desktop computer from Bytestech at Beacon Hill and found it to be the cheapest around. It also helps that I could pick it up, saving on delivery charges.
I’d previously bought one from an ebay store in Melbourne, which was good value, but this company’s prices are even better.
I’d highly recommend James at Bytestech to anyone thinking about buying a new computer. Contact him on 9453 2939 or email him at bytestech@optusnet.com.au
Internal Server Error – PayPal – Web Developers – It’s not your fault!
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@paypal.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
THIS MEANS THAT PAYPAL IS DOWN!!
I got this message over the weekend on 3rd and 4th May (Australia time). Perhaps PayPal were doing some upgrades??
I’ve been trawling the internet for an answer to why I’m getting this error message. I (and my customers) assumed that it was some sort of html code error, however, I hadn’t changed the code for over a year and it was working fine.
I’ve Googled a couple of blogs and the paypal developer blog site and it would appear to be a glitch with PayPal.
The odd thing was that when I tried again (via refresh) a couple of minutes later, it worked fine.
I’ve now changed my web page to inform the purchaser that if an error occurs, please click the PayPal button to try again.
I’ve also added a message to ask them to resort to a manual PayPal transaction if they have no success via my program.
One would think that PayPal would avoid these sorts of outages!!
I wonder how many thousand transactions were lost because of this?
If these sorts of problems continue, people will be leaving PayPal in droves. And what about all those eBay customers??
Have you had the same or a similar experience?
CompWear uses eOrderCMS
CompWear is a small manufacturer of tennis skirts, tops and sports briefs.
The skirts are a swing skirt with a semi fitted bodice made from a lightweight lycra (poly/elastane). They have an elasticised, non roll waistband. They feel great because they are very stretchy and comfortable and they look great on the tennis court.
They are very easy to care for and are wash and wear.
They are available in a range of patterns – geometric, florals, stripes, checks and can be easily mixed and matched with tops.
The tops are a simple singlet style with a hip band. They offer sun protection on the chest by not being low cut. They are made from a fine cotton knit so they are cool and comfortable and very flattering.
eOrderCMS – Search Engine Optimisation built in
eOrderCMS has built in search engine optimisation.
You can easily manage your keywords, description and wording that Google and other search engines will see when they trawl your site.
Forget the fancy search engine optimisation companies that promise you 1st page ranking. Often this is only achieved by using Google Adwords to place ads that appear at the top of the page or on the right of the page. And of course, this costs extra!
By using the organic method, you will achieve a good Google ranking just by using words and phrases that you think people would use to search for your type of business. And most importantly, include your suburb, general location description, surrounding suburbs as your keywords.
For example, if you search for ‘web developer Dee Why’, my web site appears on the first page.
Other methods that you can use to improve your Google ranking are to create pdfs or Word documents and store them on your web site. Google includes these in it’s search engine index.
So you can add your resume, info about your business, info about you, info about any specials, etc.
